Toward Dusk by Hudson Aimless
"When are you going to make up your mind?" you whispered, miles away
I can hardly hear you, asleep and lying as I am
against the grey walls
of all the little rooms
filled with the sound of leather shoes, walking
you reached out once and I can still see your arms,
paperwhites
with fine blue veins planted in silks and warm shadow
(did you hold me? even once?)
I made you laugh because I fell in love with your mouth
because I didn't know that's where I was
because your breath was warm and sweet like candied violets
your words a stream of petals to wash away the sand
"when are you going to love you as much as I do?" you whispered from the dark
I can still hear you from behind the ash covered facades
that rise into this city sky, that amaze and frighten me
you are both proud and elegant and soar above my head unafraid
I made you smile because I knew you by your eyes
because I didn't know that's where I was
because your eyes were seeds of contemplation
feeding me thoughts with which to measure the sand
"When are you going to make up your mind?" you whispered, gone
before they turn grey, to snow and ash (I will)
before they grow dry as ash (I will, I swear)
before they grow cold as snow, before the hurt ends
(I will, I swear, I will)
